Artist Statement

In her practice, Dagmar Pouwelse explores how memory, nostalgia, and identity intersect within the context of personal and shared history, with a particular interest in what is often deemed obsolete, insignificant, or forgotten.

Acting as a curator-collector of her own collections, she examines the aesthetics and symbolism of these objects, materials, or memories, bringing them together in unexpected combinations. Her use of repurposed fabrics, found objects, and (digital) images reflects her interest in the transience and absurdity of contemporary material culture.

Her practice centers on the tension between personal and collective memory, emphasizing both the resilience and impermanence of materiality. In doing so, she invites viewers to reflect on what we preserve, forget, and deem valuable.
